bone costumes

Wenzels bone costumes deal with the mass consumption of living beings, of the everyday killing and body-snatching our culture is based on, and of the normed ideal shapes into which we try to force- and discipline - our own bodies.

They spring from her research into historical corsets - designed to press natural bodies into ideal shapes, much like sculpting tools. Crossed with contemporary fashion technology, they evolve into exo-skeletons, half-organic half-mechanical apocalyptic outfits.

"Making the Bone Costumes confronted me directly with the mass-breeding and mass-kiling of animals when I got the bones of no less than 200 dead fowl from a single Berlin restaurant in a single week."
